Point one: This is tripping AND unsportsmanlike conduct AND good defense if the moment calls for drastic action.

Point two: I can't actually believe the forethought of the defender to be doing all his high jinx just a little outside the penalty area. Well done.

Point three: Prevention of this sort of play is why in most jurisdictions the offending player should be red-carded.

Still and all, maybe it preserved a team win. So, not automatically a bad idea.
